Many areas of this dirt floor crawl space are exposed, allowing the earth's moisture to rise into the crawl space and affect the relative humidity. This can lead to mold and mildew growth, and the messy and debris-covered floors make it difficult for service persons to maneuver around the crawl space.
Moisture seeps through porous foundation walls and into the crawl space raising the relative humidity in the space.
There are tears and gaps in this vapor barrier that is allowing the earth's moisture to rise into the crawl space and raise the relative humidity. This raised relative humidity had led to mold and mildew growth on many of the wooden floor joists. Musty odors and mold spores can make their way up into the home and irritate those with allergies or asthma.
Upon inspection, we found that there was little insulation in the attic space. The tops of the joists showed throughout the attic space, and several gaps and openings were present contributing to the air loss the homeowner was experiencing.
Moisture enters through open crawl space vents, unsealed sill plates and rim bands, and through the ground. This moisture can saturate fiberglass insulation between your joists, and coupled with retaliative humidity, can promote mold growth.
Cracks are forming in the brick and mason work around the home as it settles.
This crawl space is littered with debris. Brick, rock, wood, and insulation are scattered across the floor of the crawl space and need to be removed before work can begin.
Mold and mildew have formed on the floor joists of this crawl space, which can occur on any organic materials so long as the relative humidity reaches over 60% during warmer temperatures. The musty odors and mold spores can rise up into the home and cause irritation to those with allergies and asthma.
